Description

It was late at night and Kei sat on her room and read a book. She was deep into it, it was so exciting to flee to another world and be someone else for a change. She had curled up in her sofa with a bar of chocolate and a blanket wrapped around herself. She looked out of the window to see if it still snowed. It did. She smiled, since she liked the winter. But tonight there were no stars twinkling in the sky or a moon shining into her room. She continued to read silent to herself.

The mare stopped. She didn’t care to look around, she knew where she was. At the same place she had been more often these days. Outside of the girls house. C.L looked at the house and seemed to think. He gave her a quick pat. They stood outside for minutes, while C.L looked up to the window, where the lights was on. He looked at the rest of the house. He asked his mare to walk, and so she did. She walked into the garden with nonchalance, ignoring plants and vegetation. C.L placed her beneath the window, close to the wall. He loosened his feet from the stirrups and got up on the saddle like an acrobat. The mare stood still and exhaled. C.L got a grip on the edge of the rail outside of the window, jumped and heaved himself up.

Kei laid the book down and thought about what she had read. She ate a bit of chocolate and laid back in the comfy sofa. Kei noticed while she laid there, a knocking sound. She wrinkled her eyebrows and tried to locate the sound with her hearing. She looked up at the window above her. She almost got a heart attack, she didn’t scream but she fell of the sofa by the surprise. She got quickly up on her feet and looked at the window. She hurried to open it up for C.L.
- What are you doing here?! Hissed Kei while she backed away from the window, giving C.L room to climb in. He landed on the floor and took a look around in the room. He left the window and Kei walked to it, looking out of it and seeing the mare stand beneath it. She closed the window.
- What are you doing here, C.L? Kei sat down in the sofa and wrapped once again her blanket around her. C.L looked at her and smiled with his eyes. He went up to the bookcase and drew a finger over the books and the titles. He pulled one out and opened it carefully, as he was afraid that the letters on the pages would fall out if her turned them to fast.

C.L looked down at the letters. It could as well have been a Morse code for someone who could read but couldn’t understand it. He had never learned to read, he had never got around to do it. There had never been the time nor the pleasure to do so. He noticed that Kei sat with her nose closely into a book with a purple velvet cover. He observed her while he weighed the book in his hands. He placed the book back on the shelf. He walked around the room and looked at Kei’s stuff. On the table next to the bed, he got fond of a silver necklace on a silver thread with small stones in the beautiful pendent. He took his gloves off and laid them on the light blue bedspread. He picked up the necklace and held it into the light so he could take a closer look at it. It was sure beautiful. He turned it around in his hand and admired the little jewelry. He knew it. He would never forget a pendent like that. He turned on it, facing the backside. The signature F.L was engraved into the silver and shimmered as he turned it.
- What have you done with your hand? C.L lost track of where he was. He had been in another world while he had observed the pendant. He looked at Kei, who had lowered her book to her knees. C.L looked back at his hands. On his right palm, a nasty scar reflected in the dim light behind the necklace.
Kei got up and walked to C.L. He just looked at her. Kei looked at his hand, touched it and took a closer look. C.L loosened his knife from his belt and demonstrated a cut in the air over his scared hand to show how he got it.

The time went on and soon the both of them sat in the sofa, both on each side of it. Kei sat and read high for C.L while he looked at Kei’s necklace. The gloves was still in the bed and he had no problem to show his hands for Kei. He was relaxed and calm tonight. He didn’t know why he was that relaxed, maybe it was the girl in front of him who sat and read him a story. Kei smiled as she read. Knowing that she got C.L’s full attention. Suddenly he got up on his feet, very carefully and soundless as Kei read, he walked up behind her and hanged the necklace around her neck. Kei stopped to read and placed a hand over the pendant.
- My dad bought me this in France some years ago… He travels allot and found it at a local dealer shop. He got it for a fair price, he says. C.L inhaled and seemed sad. He got back to his seat and sank down, still looking at the jewelry around her neck.
- Did I say something to upset you? Kei was a bit confused about his acting. C.L shock his head and tried to smile at her but the smile wasn‘t trustworthy.
