Nidra laid down in the wet grass with wolves over her. Xanthus forced his way through branches that blocked his way and went to attack He landed between one of the wolves and the underlying mare. She snorted exhausted and shocked as she whined. Xanthus gave up a cry of horror and trampled hard against the wolf who was closest. It moved between Xanthus legs and managed to escape them. But Xanthus was on it, he got a hard grip on the wolf's neck and threw it with all his strength. The wolf whined when it hit the ground. Xanthus went back to attack and began stepping on the animal. The wolf whined and screamed between the hooves until it went silent.

He turned and saw one of the other wolves stand bent over Nidra. Xanhus stood on his hind legs and strucked with the front legs. He pounded hard with his legs into the ground so that the earth trembled under his hooves. With a snort he looked intently at the wolf who now watched the stallion. It looked as if it was determine if this mare was worth the effort, if it was worth to die to get a bite to eat. Xanthus snorted again, to remind the wolf that he still was there. Nidra trembled when the wolf removed the pressure around her neck. It went away, without letting his gaze from Xanthus. Xanthus strucked with one front leg in the air and screamed again. The wolf began to run and left the clearing to seek shelter in the forest where Xanthus could not penetrate. Xanthus looked into the forest where the wolf had disappeared, afraid that it would return.

A quiet sound made Xanthus return to his consciousness.
- Nidra! He trotted up to her even though he was so close. He bowed his head to lick her on her cheek. He froze and didn’t dare to do it. Where he would have given her a kiss, was now a open bloody wound, across her eye. He swallowed and suffered with her.
- Everything will be okay, honey ... he said and kissed her forehead instead. He stroked his muzzle over her neck and blew out warm air. He let his legs give way under him, he placed his body close to her body, and shared his warmth to her. She trembled and shook like a leaf, both of shock and the cold.
-I am not leaving you again, never again... cried Xamthus. Nidra moaned and whispered quietly, so that he had to bend his head to her mouth. She said quietly;
- I'll never leave your side, dear... I am forever with you ... then she went silent with a quiet sigh …
